A fun experience that I would definitely consider for special occasions or when in need of some 'manpering'.
Mantality.co.za received an email from a fellow a while back looking to give his soon to be wed (my condolences) bachelor buddy a full-blown ‘Old Bond Street’ cutthroat style shave, in preparation for the big doomsday. Although, currently such shops here in SA are tricky to track down, more and more salons/spas are popping up and offering this kind of service – but only in addition to what’s already offered to the ladies.
Now bless those tweezer -wielding, gossip-mongering ‘hair and nail technicians” little hearts but that’s not ideal for us men now is it – we don’t enjoy simply being an afterthought; we men want our own ‘harems of masculinity’, ‘temples of manliness’, places where a man can go – free from the tainted clutch of our less than manly oestrogen-soaked counterparts – to have our beard shaved to a smoothness not unlike that of tot’s arse; whilst discussing the finer points of a tiptronic paddle-shift gearbox or the multi-use benefit of a titanium open-lofted wedge.
One such place that is doing pretty good job of filling that gap is Floyd’s Barbershop in Fourways Crossing, which from the second you walk in, gives you a rush of sensory wonderment. The shop boasts bright colours, pumping sounds, lofty ceilings, and 60’s pop-come-Hardrock style kick in the teeth decor, by way of wall-to-wall posters from bands such as The Beatles, The Doors, AC/DC, Guns n Roses and Pink Floyd – quite distinct indeed.
It’s a far cry from the barbershops of late century London, but is unique nonetheless, and offers everything from buzz cuts and hot shaves to head shaves and tinting. I must mention that what I found quite neat is that your hair is washed and cut all from the comfort of a single chair. No walking over there to wash then walking back to cut.
Loads of products are also available to buy from the same counter you pay from, brands like American Crew, GHD and Redken Men are stocked.
Also ask about the unofficial promotion: where if 800 smackers worth of hair care is bought they’ll throw in a free cut.
I received a trim and a hot towel shave which I have to say was a real treat. Lying there wrapped in a hot towel, I could literally feel my beard softening and the follicles lifting. That was then followed by pre-shave oil and shave cream lathering. I have to be honest, I was a little apprehensive about Noma and her treacherously sharp cutthroat razor. I soon relaxed after she demonstrated here adept knowledge of a man’s facial contours by gliding the blade methodically (whilst stretching in places) over my well oiled skin. And once I loosened my white-knuckled grip, stopped kicking nervously and no longer wailed like a cat about to be dunked into a bucket of water, began to settle in and enjoy the shave. Oh, and to finish off you’re given a complimentary back and neck massage which was an especially nice touch.
All round a most enjoyable 40 mins was spent at Floyd’s and I can safely say I will be going back for more.
