Experience Review: Elephant Encounter and Safari Bela-Bela

Being in such close quarters to these magnificent creatures is a humbling experience you will not forget in a hurry. I will say though that being a guy who is almost 6'4" tall does make it slightly uncomfortable but fortunately you're not out there for hours.

Elephants have to be one of the most majestic land animals on the planet. Weighing in at a few tonnes, these gigantic creatures have the potential to be both incredibly docile and relaxed, but also a brute force to be reckoned with – which many a full grown male lion has discovered whilst trying to make a – seemingly easy – meal of an elephant calf.

As a fellow mammal, elephants have fascinated human beings for the longest time. In some cultures elephants are highly regarded spiritual icons, in others they’re an important part of daily life and agriculture.

So if you’ve ever wanted to get up close and personal, and ride with one through the African bush then now has never been a better time.

The elephant encounter is a complete package that will slowly introduce you to the elephants and allow you to get up close and personal. Touching these docile beasts is a surreal experience, and a very humbling one at that. You will get to have photos taken on your favourite elephants knee, as well as photos with you touching the elephants, and photos of you throughout your safari.

The elephant sanctuary has about 6 elephants. Many of which have been rehabilitated from neighbouring farms. There is no risk of injury being around the elephants as their trainers are standing by to reassure them and show the amazing skills and tricks that these elephants have. Both kids and adults are welcome.

After the meet and greet you get to hop aboard the Pachyderm Express, and traipse through the bush for about 30-45 minutes. This is a fantastic feeling and although being a few metres off the ground you feel safe sitting behind the trainer who guides the elephant along the bush trial. You can expect to see Giraffe, Eland, Zebra, Kudu, Red Hartebeest, Impala, Blue Wildebeest, as well as Ostrich and more. Sit back, relax and enjoy the scenery from your elevated position as the elephants quietly traverse through the african bush, you may even feel the elephants strength as they break tree branches on the way as “pad kos” and as they power through small ravines.

There’s also a little shop if you’d like to buy some gifts and memorabilia to take home. The sanctuary is only1hr 45 mins from the northern suburbs of Johannesburg, so this makes for a great day out with the family.
